Six Blues Nominated for UEFA Fans’ Team of the Year

Chelsea’s women’s team has seen six of its stars rewarded for a strong 2020 with nominations for the fans’ Team of The Year.

Magdalena Eriksson, Maren Mjelde, So-Yun Ji, Erin Cuthbert, Bethany England and Pernille Harder have all earned a spot on the shortlist.

Vote: Fill in your best 11 to get all six of Chelsea’s girls in.

Magdalena Eriksson

The captain of the FA WSL winning team. Enough said. ALL RIGHTS RESERVED: FOURFOURTWO

The Swede has the claim on FA WSL winning captain for 2020. That alone gets her the nomination, but over the 2019/20 and 2020/21 seasons Eriksson was the consistent defensive rock she needed to be. In her ten FA WSL starts in 2020, six of them have resulted in a Chelsea clean sheet.

Eriksson has been as critical at national level, scoring twice in five games as Sweden qualified for the Euros.

Maren Mjelde

Mjelde’s versatility has seen her be effective in midfield, in the centre of defence and at right back throughout the year. So far in the 2020/21 FA WSL, Chelsea have used her exclusively at right back. This role suits her as a defender who is far from afraid to get stuck in going forward. In last season’s FA WSL, she netted four goals.

For Norwegian national team, Mjelde played her 150th match when she captained them to a win against Wales. That win gave Norway the points they needed to qualify for next year’s Euros.

So-Yun Ji

Chelsea’s midfield dynamo has scored exactly six goals in her last three FA WSL seasons. Last season, Ji had three assists to go with her six goals. Ji has one goal already this season, with 15 more matches to go for her to reach the magic six.

Erin Cuthbert

The young Scot had reasonably good year with Chelsea with three goals and seven assists in her impact role across the 2019/20 and 2020/21 seasons. Cuthbert has become a fixture in the national team too, featuring five times in Scotland’s ill fated Euro Qualifying campaign. Her one goal against Albania is enough to tie her for the team’s top scorer in qualifiers so far.

At 21, Cuthbert will be central to the Scottish team for a while yet. It may well be the same case at Chelsea if they can hold on to her.

Bethany England

2020 had England confirm herself as a genuine option up front for Chelsea and England. ALL RIGHTS RESERVED: THE GUARDIAN

England had a breakout season for Chelsea in 2019/20. Her 14 goals made her the leading goalscorer in the FA WSL winning team and the second highest goal scorer across the league – Behind only Arsenal’s Vivienne Miedema with 16.

The Englishwoman made her national team debut in 2019, playing a series of friendlies. Her full national debut came in 2020 in the American invitational tournament; the SheBelieves Cup.

In the early stages of this season, England has three goals and two assists in a stacked forward line. Sharing the pitch with the likes of Pernille Harder, Sam Kerr and Erin Cuthbert has made it difficult to put consistent minutes together. However, when she’s been on the park, she’s made an impact.

Pernille Harder

The Dutch striker has only been with Chelsea for a few months, but she’s already made an impact. ALL RIGHTS RESERVED: THE GUARDIAN

Technically, most of Harder’s achievements this season were with Wolfsburg. But she’s been at Chelsea since September, so we’re claiming her. Soon after joining Chelsea, the Dane was named the UEFA Player of the Season for 2019/20. Harder scored nine Champions League goals for Wolfsburg as they made it to the final. Ultimately, they lost 3-1 to French giants Lyon. Wolfsburg did win the Frauen Bundesliga, with Harder top scoring with 27 goals from 21 matches.
