Report: Thomas Tuchel unsure over suitability of £34m attacker – started the season on fire

Chelsea have been linked with a signing of a striker in recent days and any one of a few deals could be completed by the time the window shuts this week.

With options on the table, it seems Chelsea don’t see Armando Broja or Kai Havertz as the number one choice down the middle and want to bring in reinforcements.

That could come in the form of Wilfried Zaha, who has begun the season in great form but is tempted by the prospect of a new challenge.

However, it seems that Thomas Tuchel is ‘unsure’ over the suitability of Zaha and where he fits into this Chelsea team.

Latest reports on Zaha

The latest reports claim that Zaha is an option for Chelsea, but Thomas Tuchel has been wondering about his suitability, according to Miguel Delaney.

Crystal Palace would be unlikely to sanction a transfer unless they can bring in a suitable alternative – but with only a day to go before the window shuts, the Blues may have left it too late.

He is in the final year of his deal and is in his prime at 29 years old; if this signing is ever going to happen, it’s now.

Especially given Chelsea’s striking issues – Zaha scored 14 goals in the Premier League last season (and has four goals already) playing a combination of a central striker or left winger. He can bring goals, pace, and aggression and he won’t have to worry about being double/tripled up on every week by opposition defenders. That freedom at a top club could be a lethal combination.

Is he the right fit?

Chelsea does not currently have a player like Zaha and he is certainly an upgrade on Hakim Ziyech, Christian Pulisic and Kai Havertz in terms of his physical make-up, PL experience and directness.

The key is directness and experience. Pulisic, Mason Mount, Havertz, Armando Broja are all under the age of 24, with Sterling and Ziyech offering the experience. Neither of the younger players have displayed that they can contribute to the same levels as Sterling or any other elite attackers in the league.

He registers in the 87th percentile for non-penalty goals in Europe, with no other Chelsea forward (except Sterling) totalling that. In terms of his off-the-ball efforts, he also registers in the 81st percentile for pressures – showing he can do it all.

Whether or not he is the right fit, Chelsea do not have long to sort out a potential deal, unless Palace have lined up a replacement – but reports do not suggest anything as of right now.
