Jamie Carragher: “Oblak would be a game-changer”

Former Liverpool player and Sky Sports pundit Jamie Carragher believes that Chelsea should be looking at Jan Oblak as a replacement for Kepa Arrizabalaga.

He said: “Given how much money has already been invested in more attackers, I would be surprised if Chelsea have not already lined up Arrizabalaga’s successor. Atletico Madrid’s Jan Oblak is the best available and would be a game-changer.”

Carragher continued, “Under Lampard, Chelsea have become one of the country’s most exciting teams going forward, but at the back, they are a mess.”

Chelsea’s new signings reflect this. Timo Werner and Hakeem Ziyech joining Tammy Abraham, Mason Mount and the in-form Oliver Giroud and Christian Pulisic does create a strong attack. But work needs to be done in defence.

The midfield could do with some fortifying, and there are improvements to be made across the back four. But the most pressing issue is the goalkeeper.

Kepa has been under immense pressure in his second season at Chelsea. He has struggled for form and ended the season with the lowest save % of all starting goalkeepers in the Premier League.

Chelsea needed to win their final match of the season to secure a UEFA Champions League place for 2020/21. In goal, was Willy Caballero. The world’s most expensive goalkeeper was dropped to the bench.

There are a number of keepers that have been linked to Chelsea, but Carragher is sold on Oblak.

Why Oblak?

Oblak was the second-best goalkeeper in the 2019/20 La Liga season, behind only former Chelsea man Thibaut Courtois. Oblak has kept 17 clean sheets to Courtois’ 18.

Despite third place Atlético finishing 17 points behind Courtois’ league winning Real Madrid, they only lost one more match than them. So defence was not the issue for them.

The 27-year-old has been at Atlético since the 2014/15 season. In his six seasons in Madrid, Oblak has made 247 appearances in all competitions.

Atlético have Oblak locked away until 2023, but there is a release clause of £109 million. Chelsea spent £71.6 million on Kepa to break the record for a goalkeeper’s transfer fee.

Will they be willing to break that record by another £38 million?

Carragher says it’s worth it, adding: “Atletico Madrid’s Jan Oblak is the best available and would be a game-changer. Yes, meeting his £109m buyout clause is mega expensive, but it looks like Chelsea have the funds.”
