How did Timo Werner and Hakim Ziyech fare on Chelsea debuts?

Chelsea’s signings of Timo Werner and Hakim Ziyech were met with excitement from the moment they were announced.

Along with the signings of Ben Chilwell and Thiago Silva, plus the imminent arrival of Kai Havertz, Chelsea look to have made excellent additions to the squad.

Werner and Ziyech made their first appearances in a Chelsea shirt during a 1-1 draw at Brighton. How did Chelsea’s new arrivals fare?

Werner and Ziyech, along with Callum Hudson-Odoi, lined up in a front-three in a 4-3-3/4-2-3-1 formation. With Ruben Loftus-Cheek in an advanced midfield role, Lampard’s front four provided a combination of speed, guile and dribbling ability which often looked dangerous.

It took Werner a mere four minutes to get on the scoresheet and Ziyech had a heavy part to play in creating the goal. The Moroccan delivered a stunning pass to Hudson-Odoi whose mistimed header fell into Werner’s path for the German to tuck away.

This was the highlight of Chelsea’s afternoon. Seeing Ziyech’s creative instincts and Werner’s predatory finishing will provide optimism to Frank Lampard and his staff.

Werner

Both Werner and Ziyech looked sharp in their play on their first appearance for Chelsea. Werner, besides his goal, appeared to blend seamlessly into the way Lampard is looking to build his team. With excellent movement, Werner made space for Hudson-Odoi and Loftus-Cheek, in particular, to dribble into. The German international, while rarely featuring as an out-and-out striker for Leipzig, looked at home in this role.

Ziyech

Ziyech proved, in his role leading to the goal, why Lampard decided to spend £36m on the former Ajax star. His eye for a pass, coupled with a different angle of attack with his left-foot, seamlessly opened up Brighton’s five-man defence. It is clear that Ziyech adds something entirely new to Chelsea’s attack.

A left-footed player from the right, his crossing ability and effortless technical quality are going to prove a real asset when faced with breaking down obdurate defences, a tactical facet of the game becoming increasingly common in the Premier League.

Overall, Frank Lampard will be delighted with the impacts of his two new attacking purchases. Having both had an extended pre-season, Werner and Ziyech did appear to be Chelsea’s two sharpest players on the pitch.

Lampard will hope Ziyech’s knee injury doesn’t interfere with his preparation for the opening day, also away at Brighton. The front-three which began this friendly is most likely to feature in that first Premier League game.

Werner, Ziyech and Hudson-Odoi provided an interesting blend of qualities and Chelsea undoubtedly looked dangerous until their respective substitutions.

It was a positive start for Chelsea’s two new arrivals, and with the aforementioned Chilwell, Thiago Silva and Havertz to come, Chelsea fans can look forward to the impact of their new arrivals.
