Chelsea’s spending hits record-breaking number for a summer window – Todd Boehly has spent big

Chelsea’s spending has hit a record-breaking figure for a summer transfer window on deadline day with new owner Todd Boehly spending big.

The announcement of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang to Chelsea has taken the figure to a record-breaking £273m of summer spending.

In contrast, Jose Mourinho’s famous first transfer window in 2004 saw £150M spent on 11 new players and now eight signings this summer has clinched the record.

Will it pay off for Chelsea in the short and long term? We will have to see. But until the end of the transfer window, that figure may still rise.

Big money spent – will it work?

A world record spending spree has been afforded by the new American owner Todd Boehly and he has certainly replaced the void left by former owner Roman Abramovich – who I’m sure has had a few raised eyebrows watching Chelsea do their business this summer.

The big-name arrivals of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Wesley Fofana, Raheem Sterling and Kalidou Koulibaly are great additions, as well as Marc Cucurella, who has settled into life as a Chelsea player brilliantly so far.

There’s also the signings of younger players such as England’s U19 captain Carney Chukwuemeka, goalkeeper Gabriel Slonina, Omari Hutchinson, Zak Sturge, Eddie Beach, Shumaira Mheuka and Tyler Dibling.

However, it is claimed that the signings of Hutchinson, Sturge, Beach, Mheuka and Dibling don’t count towards the overall figure due to fees or compensation packages agreed.

Players have also left Chelsea in the shape of Timo Werner, Romelu Lukaku (loan) Malang Sarr (loan) Callum Hudson-Odoi (loan) Ethan Ampadu (loan) Emerson, Antonio Rudiger, Andreas Christensen, Matt Miazga, Jake Clarke-Salter, Charly Musonda Jr, Callum and Ross Barkley and Danny Drinkwater – both who have had their contract terminated.

Seemingly, the club has raised around £47M from fees but have also taken away big wages off the books from underperforming players such as Lukaku and Werner.

The spending spree sees Chelsea beat Manchester City, Real Madrid and their own previous record of £221.4M in 2020. Real Madrid (2019) were top with £272M with Manchester City’s spending spree in 2017 totalling £223.8M. Both have been beaten by Boehly’s spending.

There may be more to come in the form of Edson Alvarez, but this is certainly a statement by the new owner that he wants to keep Chelsea at the top and back to winning trophies on a regular basis.
