Chelsea’s £44m target a ‘no-show’ at training this morning – player wants move

Chelsea’s £44m midfield target has reportedly not shown up for training this morning in the hope of forcing a move to England.

The transfer window is drawing to a close but the Blues are in full swing as they target an attacker and midfielder.

It seems Ajax’ Edson Alvarez is the target for Chelsea and the Mexican is reportedly not at training this morning as he hopes to push a move to England.

Alvarez would be a defensive midfield signing and would help Chelsea cope with their current issues in midfield with N’golo Kante and Ruben Loftus-Cheek injured.

Latest reports on Alvarez

As mentioned, the 24-year-old is said to have not turned up to training with Ajax today. Dutch journalist Mike Verweij has reported his absence following Chelsea’s £44million bid yesterday.

He is thought to want to join the London club before the deadline closes and is pushing Ajax to let him go. The Dutch club are still yet to respond to Chelsea’s offer.

According to Ben Jacobs, Alvarez will be the priority with the Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang deal already closed off. He is thought to be impressed by Thomas Tuchel and Chelsea’s new era which has seen them sign Raheem Sterling, Marc Cucurella, Wesley Fofana and Kalidou Koulibaly as well as seeing fringe and high-wage players taken off the books.

With two years left on his deal and with the club desperate to keep the defensive midfielder, £44m seems a fair price considering he isn’t one of Ajax’s ‘stars’. He is never going to warrant Antony levels of money but Ajax would be losing a key player should it go through.

Chelsea’s midfield solution?

Fans are worried about Chelsea’s midfield with Loftus-Cheek and Kante currently sidelined. Jorginho seems to be in mixed form, whilst Mateo Kovacic is still returning to full fitness but has featured in the last few games as a substitute.

Then there’s Conor Gallagher, who many believe could thrive in a three-man midfield, as opposed to the double pivot we’ve been seeing. Alvarez brings value to this Chelsea side by being able to play as a lone defensive midfielder in a midfield three.

His tackling, aggression and physical stature should allow Tuchel to field a midfield three and a back four to a more successful effect. Considering Alvarez can also play as a centre-back too, there’s no doubting what he can bring to the team.

Throw in 50+ caps for his country, years of Champions League experience all despite being only 24, then it seems Chelsea can’t afford to miss out on one of Ajax’s best players.
