Chelsea to keep £100k-a-week flop – despite reports of a move away

Chelsea will now keep Hakim Ziyech rather than sell him back to Ajax before the transfer window slams shut thanks to recent reports.

Ziyech, the former Ajax star, was nailed on to replace the Manchester United-bound Antony, who will sign for the club in a mega-money deal.

Returning back to the club which gave him everything, where he would have received regular game time and a system more suited to him would have been a move that worked for all parties.

However, The Blues have since performed a U-turn which suggests that deals for Anthony Gordon and Wilfried Zaha are unlikely.

Latest reports on Ziyech

The latest reports on Ziyech claim that Ajax will now sign Sevilla’s Lucas Ocampos – full agreement in place with Sevilla on €20m fee. He’ll be in Amsterdam to undergo medical tests today.

Fabrizio Romano claims Ziyech has never been close as the deal has stalled with Chelsea due to their reported price tag. Ocampos will be the new signing to replace Antony. However, Spurs have entered the fray in the last few hours – according to Relevo.

For Chelsea fans, the issue is that Christian Pulisic – who wants to leave on loan for regular minutes – was benched for Ziyech to start against Southampton last night, having been considered expendable all summer.

Signings have been made and good players have come in but the scattergun approach in the final weeks of the window has been frustrating and could backfire on the side and Thomas Tuchel this season. Especially since the deal was in advanced talks until just a few days ago. There are rumours of a move to Spurs from Relevo but it isn’t a reputable source.

What happens now?

With the club selling/parting ways with the likes of Romelu Lukaku, Danny Drinkwater, Ross Barkley and Timo Werner, the club has been successful in removing players with high wages that haven’t performed for the club in recent years.

The club is in for at least one more attacking player, either Anthony Gordon, Wilfried Zaha or Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and one of Pulisic or Ziyech leaving would have made sense.

Ziyech’s time at Chelsea will be viewed as underwhelming despite helping the club to win the UEFA Champions League and Super Cup as well as having moments such as his stunning strike against Tottenham in the 2-0 win last season.

When he looks back on his Chelsea career he will be disappointed with a return of only 14 goals and 10 assists across 84 games at the club however, the trophy successes will certainly soften the blow. Despite that, it really doesn’t make much sense to keep him at the club, and I wouldn’t be surprised to see him go in January or next summer.
