Chelsea to complete £75m & £77m signings – summer spending continues

Chelsea have completed the signings of both Wesley Fofana and Josko Gvardiol as their summer spending spree continues.

In terms of the Gvardiol deal, he will be loaned to RB Leipzig and allowed to complete another season of vital development being a key member of a title-chasing side.

The search for a centre-back seems to be over, with the back line consisting of Thiago Silva, Kalidou Koulibaly, Fofana, Cesar Azpilcueta and have back-up with Reece James and Marc Cucurella when needed.

It seems that Trevor Chalobah will also leave on a temporary deal, given his minutes will be reduced as a result of the signings.

Chelsea’s centre-back targets (finally) signed

The latest reports from Fabrizio Romano claim that Chelsea are in advanced talks with RB Leipzig to sign Joško Gvardiol and he’ll join Chelsea in June 2023 for a fee around €90m.

The Blues had been linked with centre-backs such as Nathan Ake, Mathias De Ligt, Jules Kounde, Wesley Fofana and Gvardiol over the course of the summer. Gvardiol, 20, has starred for RB Leipzig ever since Ibrahima Konate and Dayot Upamecano both left the club. He was always considered an option

Chelsea had looked to use RB Leipzig’s interest in Timo Werner to their advantage by hoping to secure a swap deal for the defender, but they could only secure Werner’s departure.

Fofana has been part of a transfer saga for a long time now, with Leicester standing strong on their stance for the last few weeks. Todd Boerly flexed his financial muscles and made them an offer they couldn’t refuse.

What makes them worth big money?

Both have been earmarked as top young talents over the years and now they are receiving the recognition they deserve thanks to their breakout performances at Leicester and Leipzig respectively.

Fofana’s stats show that he ranks in between the 78th-93rd percentiles for interceptions, non-penalty xG, dribbles completed, pass completion, passes attempted and progressive carries. A pure example of the modern-day centre-back.

For Gvardiol, his stats are an incredible read; he ranks between the 94th and 99th percentile for progressive carries, shots total, passes attempted, interceptions, progressive passes and dribbles completed.

In fact, the Croatian is the highest ranking defender when it comes to dribbles completed. This shows that Chelsea have signed two incredibly well-schooled defenders with much more technical quality than most in their position.

Two expensive signings, but two signings that could well be at the club for well over three years. With the likes of Cesar Azpilicueta and Thiago Silva potentially leaving next summer, signing two young replacements is good business.

As long as they can recreate the form they’ve shown in their careers so far.
