Chelsea should sign Cavani as Mertens alternative

The Blues have been strongly linked with a move for Mertens. With the latest reports coming out of San Paolo, they must now set their sights on other targets and they can do no better than Edinson Cavani.

The whole Mertens saga has been on since January but looks set to end as The Guardian reports that he is set to sign a new deal which will further keep him in Naples.

Cavani, like Mertens, could be subject of a summer move as his current deal at Parc des Princes comes to an end. The French side have however shown no interest in a renewal so far leading to speculations that “El matador” could be on his way out of the capital.

The Uruguayan would certainly be welcome at Stamford Bridge having built a reputation over the last decade as one of world football’s deadliest strikers.

Mauro Icardi’s arrival has seen Cavani’s game-time reduce drastically but he has still managed to score seven goals in all competitions despite making only 12 starts.

His movement and sense of positioning coupled with aplomb finishing make him a handful for opposing defences to deal with.

With the possibility of it being a free transfer, Cavani’s signing would also represent a good deal financially and at the same time equip Chelsea with more weapons in their arsenal.

Cavani has also shown that he can fill in at left-wing. This was a position that he had to occupy for three years due to Ibrahimovic’s arrival in Paris.

His vast wealth of experience would also come in handy for Chelsea’s current number 9, Tammy Abraham. As he continues to develop, tutelage under Cavani would certainly help a lot.

Frank Lampard may be set to miss out on Dries Mertens but should Chelsea manage to secure Cavani’s signature, it could turn out to be a blessing in disguise.
