Chelsea made approach for £103m ‘generational talent’ this summer – player available next summer

Chelsea have had a busy summer transfer window, even by their standards, and reports are claiming that the club did try to sign a £103m valued player labelled as a ‘generational talent’ earlier this summer.

The Blues have seen high-profile additions such as Raheem Sterling, Kalidou Koulibaly and Marc Cucurella with many more rumoured.

With the window drawing to a close, we can look back to earlier in the window when Chelsea were after Borussia Dortmund’s Jude Bellingham.

Reports claim they had made an approach earlier in the summer with Liverpool being the other English club involved in any sort of negotiations.

Chelsea in for Jude Bellingham

Whereas this summer Chelsea have signed no midfielders, they did welcome back Conor Gallagher from a successful loan spell as well as young starlet Carney Chukwuemeka.

But neither of the young stars have been earmarked as regular starters. The club also said goodbye to Danny Drinkwater, Ross Barkley and Saul Niguez as Chelsea balanced the books.

Bellingham, 19, is one of the most highly coveted young players in world football and has drawn interest from Real Madrid, alongside Chelsea and Liverpool.

He will play another season in Germany, but next summer there will certainly be a bidding war of sorts for the Dortmund player’s signature.

According to the Athletic, Liverpool were ready to meet their £103m valuation of the player but they were not willing to offload the player. It was the right call given they sold their star man Erling Haaland to Manchester City.

It remains to be seen what will happen with Bellingham, who is valued at £72m and has three years left on his deal.

Is Bellingham the right move?

Given the advanced ages of Jorginho and N’golo Kante, it is important for Chelsea to look to the future for their midfield. Especially given the long-term plan to move to a back four which requires certain types of midfielders – the likes of which aren’t currently at the club.

Not to mention the fact that Kante has entered the final year of his deal and PSG keeping a close eye on the developing situation.

We know Declan Rice is a target for the club, but with injuries becoming a regular occurrence for Kante and even Mateo Kovacic. There’s also Ruben Loftus-Cheek who’s had a resurgence in recent times, but that also only leaves Chukwuemeka and Gallagher as well as potentially Billy Gilmour as options.

Next summer could see one of Kante or Jorginho leave and, if that is the case, perhaps Bellingham becomes more of a priority.
