Chelsea have €100M bid rejected for ‘exciting winger’ who is lighting up Europe – release clause is €150M

Chelsea have made a late move to sign one of Europe’s most exciting wingers and have had a €100M bid rejected.

The Blues have been one of the most active in the market in Europe this summer and they don’t seem to be slowing down on the final day of the transfer window.

Despite signing Raheem Sterling, Marc Cucurella, Kalidou Koulibaly and Carney Chukwuemeka, they are still rumoured to sign Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang today and have had a €100m bid rejected for AC Milan’s Rafael Leao.

With question marks over Chelsea’s attack, Thomas Tuchel will hope Leao could replicate his form for Milan which helped them to the Serie A title last season.

Latest reports on Leao

The latest reports claim the club has turned down a €100m bid for the 23-year-old who is contracted to the club until 2024.

Currently valued at £63m, journalist Manu Sainz claims that the player has a €150m release clause in his contract – with Chelsea not expected to pay that today.

Furthermore, the club turned their attention to the Portuguese international after any deal for Neymar was seen as impossible. Chelsea want to sign a midfielder and striker before the window closes.

It’s unlikely the club will want to sell given they’re looking to retain their Scudetto after last year’s triumph as well as looking to put in a far better showing in the Champions League. Leao is a key player and the club may not be able to find a suitable replacement in time if they let him go today.

Would he fit in at Chelsea?

He currently plays on the left-hand side of Milan’s attack and has played down the centre before but has made his name as a tricky, exciting winger who is a direct threat almost every game.

Last season was his best to date with 14 goals and 12 assists in all competitions which helped Milan win their first title for over 10 years.

His stats paint a picture of a direct, progressive threat who is always looking to receive the ball in advanced areas. For example, he ranks between the 88th-95th percentile for touches in the attacking penalty area per 90, assists, shots total, dribbles completed and progressive carries.

Watching him blossom into one of the most exciting wingers has been really interesting to see over the last two seasons and his ability to go either way continues to cause big problems for whatever right-back he comes up against.
