Chelsea could sell £10.80m wonderkid – not part of Tuchel’s plans

Chelsea could be ready to offload £10.8m wonderkid who is no longer in Thomas Tuchel’s plans for this season.

The Scottish international Billy Gilmour had been given a squad number, but it seems he will be moved on before the window shuts tomorrow.

Gilmour, 21, hasn’t featured for Chelsea since the 2020/21 season and spent last season on loan at Norwich who were unfortunately relegated.

With issues in midfield with injuries at this current time it could be risky to let Gilmour leave, but Brighton are reportedly leading the race.

Latest reports on Gilmour to Brighton

Brighton are leading the race for Chelsea and Scotland midfielder Gilmour, who is closing in on a permanent move to the Amex Stadium, according to the Telegraph Sport.

His deal at Chelsea runs for another summer and he currently earns around £43k-a-week at the club.

Gilmour burst onto the scene under Frank Lampard during the 2019/20 season where he produced man-of-the-match performances in back-to-back games against Liverpool in the FA Cup and then in the Premier League against Everton.

He also was MOTM on his Champions League and International debut for Scotland and was praised by Roy Keane following his performance against Liverpool in the cup – “he looked like a world-class player” Keane claimed on Sky Sports.

Despite being around the first team for the last few years, he’s only made 22 senior appearances and has no goals or assists for the first team.

With N’golo Kante, Jorgino, Ruben Loftus-Cheek and Mateo Kovacic all injury prone, its certainly a strange decision to sell Gilmour at the current time.

Are Chelsea making a mistake?

They could be. Fans know all too well about selling young stars before giving them a proper chance and how that can turn out (Mo Salah, Kevin De Bruyne, Fikayo Tomori, Tammy Abraham etc) and it could happen again here.

Graham Potter is a fantastic footballing manager, who has managed to take a side filled with virtually unknown players and develop them into very good PL players who are all adept on the ball.

This could suit Gilmour having a manager who will love utilising him in midfield. He could also play alongside the rising star Moises Caicedo and enjoy a successful time there. Staying at Chelsea will see him as virtually the last midfield choice.

However, the club could reconsider given the injuries suffered and the fact that Ethan Ampadu has also left on loan. One to watch in the dying moments of this year’s summer window.
