Chelsea consider Lille keeper as possible Kepa replacement

Lille keeper Mike Maignan has been identified as a potential replacement for Blues keeper Kepa Arrizabalaga.

It’s no secret that Chelsea need to address their goalkeeper situation after Kepa Arrizabalaga’s displays in goal last season.

Kepa’s woeful form forced Frank Lampard at times to turn to his second choice Willy Caballero in some games.

Willy Caballero has said Chelsea are “more together than ever” after reacting to scenes at Wembley Stadium on Sunday when goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga refused to come off in the Carabao Cup final defeat to Manchester City. ALL RIGHTS RESERVED BY BLEACHER REPORT.

The club has been linked with a few goalkeepers as they look to strengthen between the sticks. According to Sky Sports News, 25-year old Lille keeper Mike Maignan has reportedly attracted interest from Chelsea.

Maignan’s performances have led to a national team call up. The Blues are yet to make an official bid for the player. Maignan would reportedly cost the Blues around £27m. The player also has two years left on his current contract.

What Maignan would add to Chelsea

Maigan is one of Lille’s most consistent performers and has been ever-present this past season in Lille’s fourth-place finish for the 2019/20 campaign.

I think £27m is a bargain price for a player of Maignan’s quality and strengthing the keeper position is essential if the Blues are to succeed. ALL RIGHTS RESERVED BY SOCCER SOULS.

A season that saw Maignan end off with 12 clean sheets. Maignan has good shot-stopping reflexes that complement his other strengths such as good concentration and saving shots from close range.

At 1,91m tall Maignan knows how to command his penalty box well and excels at stopping crosses. Last season Maignan had an 11.5% success rate when it came to stopping crosses, third-best in Ligue 1. Maignan is comfortable with the ball at his feet and is a solid passer of the pall for a goalkeeper.

Transfer verdict

The goalkeeper position is a priority for the Blues in this current transfer window.

If Chelsea do decide to keep Kepa, Maignan would provide healthy competition which would force the Spaniard to elevate his game. Equally, Maignan is of good enough quality to hold down a place in the starting 11.

At 25, the Frenchman has many promising years ahead and his recent call up to the national squad shows just how far the ex PSG man has come.
