Chelsea legend Peter Cech suggested the club are looking for a keeper but hints club not given up on Kepa Arrizaballaga.
The 2019/20 campaign was awful for Kepa. The Spaniard was dropped many times by boss Frank Lampard. Even in key games such as the FA cup final, Lampard was forced to turn to Willy Caballero.
This has sparked rumours that the 25-year-old could be sold this transfer window. Chelsea have also been linked with a few possible replacements for Kepa.
Chelsea technical and performance advisor, Peter Cech suggests the club will stick with the Spaniard. Cech has not ruled out possibly strengthening the goalkeeper department.
In an interview with Sport.CZ, Cech stated: “Kepa struggled last season, that is unquestionable.
”But the club invested in him and gave him a long-term contract because they believe he has the qualities and attributes to be successful.
“Additions will be made to the squad, perhaps even in goal, and this is what is being discussed now.”
What Cech’s comments suggest about Kepa’s future
Cech’s comments suggest Chelsea’s hierarchy are not yet willing to give up on their £71m investment. While reports suggest Kepa is not willing to throw in the towel on his Chelsea career.
While it looks like Kepa might stay at Stamford Bridge another year, his position in the starting line up is far from secure.
With Chelsea’s spending big money so far on Timo Werner, Ben Chilwell, Hakim Ziyech and Thiago Silva. The Blues might not have big money to throw at a big name such as Jan Oblak.
Chelsea may have to turn lesser-known players such as Mike Maignan or Eduard Mendy to provide competition.
Kepa has his work cut out for him in his third season in London. He will need to perform close to the level of predecessor Cech if he is to win over the fans and his manager.
