Ajax linked with a defensive midfielder amidst Chelsea’s £43M interest

Ajax have been linked with a move for a defensive midfielder which has sparked excitement for Chelsea fans as it could confirm their £43M signing.

The Blues are hoping to sign a midfielder before the window closes today and they have already had a £43M bid rejected last night for Edson Alvarez.

For the sake of the current midfield, a defensive midfielder is seen as the most important position to secure given their recent performances plus current injuries.

It seems that they may get their man after all, as Ajax have been strongly linked with a move for free agent Florian Grillitsch.

Latest reports on Alvarez and Ajax

Today’s reports claim that the Ajax midfielder has refused to train with the club in order to push for a move to Chelsea. It’s claimed that he doesn’t know if he’ll get another opportunity to move to England and it’s clear he wants the move.

In Ajax’s mind, they don’t want to lose another key player after already selling Lisandro Martinez, Nicolas Tagliafico and Antony already this summer.

According to Gianluca Di Marzio, Ajax have made a move for Grillitsch, who is currently a free agent and like-for-like replacement for the club.

This could mean that the club has accepted the Alvarez deal to Chelsea to sign the 27-year-old Austrian who can play centre back, defensive midfield or even as a central midfielder.

Chelsea’s midfield solution?

Chelsea fans want to see a move to a back four to help them solve their creative issues and to also get the best out of their midfield and attack. However, without N’golo Kante in the team, Jorginho isn’t able to secure Chelsea’s defence as fans would like.

Alvarez is an experienced campaigner as a lone defensive midfielder and has played there in a free-flowing Ajax team that has played some wonderful in recent years, with the Mexican at the root of their midfield.

His defensive stats should get fans excited ranking in the 94th and 98th percentiles for clearances and aerials won. As well as the 98th for pass completion; a combination of being tough in the tackle and also good on the ball will no doubt help Chelsea.

It will also allow players like Conor Gallagher, Mason Mount, Mateo Kovacic and even Carney Chukwuemeka to play in their desired positions which will give Chelsea balance, control and that added quality and threat from midfield due to a more settled and appropriate formation.
